Canis dirus, also known as the dire wolf, is an extinct species of canid. This large canid was ~25% larger than a modern-day wolf with a wider and taller skull, a greater sagittal crest along the back of the skull, and a thicker mandible, enabling it to have a stronger bite force. Canis dirus also had a larger body but shorter limbs making it stockier than modern wolves. Skeletal material has been found all across North and South America from Pleistocene to Early Holocene age deposits (125,000-9,000 years before present). This particular skull comes from a massive collection of Canis dirus material collected from the Rancho La Brea tar pits. The tar pits have produced material from over 4,000 Canis dirus individuals.

This is a museum quality cast replica made with a durable polyurethane resin. It was molded directly from the original restored skull, not a 3D printed skull or a sculpture. The resin cast is made on demand and is produced using methods that preserve all of the fine details found in the original specimen.

Display size: 12”x6.5”x12” as displayed with mouth open, not including the display stand. Display weight is 3.7 pounds including stand. Variations on the color of the skull and the mount (i.e. wall mount) are possible. Please contact Fossilogic for information and cost. Free shipping on all orders within the USA. International orders will pay actual shipping costs.
